Swedish MP Questions Inclusion of Bitcoin in National Reserves
"Its monetary properties are comparable to gold, especially in times of growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty."
— Rickard Nordin, Swedish Parliamentarian
In a move reflecting a rising international debate, Sweden has become the latest country to consider the role of Bitcoin in national financial strategy. On April 7, 2025, Swedish MP Rickard Nordin submitted a formal question to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson, urging the government to explore the possibility of including Bitcoin in Sweden’s foreign currency reserves.
In his letter titled “Inkludering av bitcoin i valutareserven”, Nordin argues that Bitcoin's decentralized nature, scarcity, and use as a store of value make it a strong candidate for strategic reserve status, similar to gold.
“Bitcoin is also an important tool for freedom fighters to process payments while under authoritarian oppression,”
wrote Nordin, underlining the political dimensions of Bitcoin adoption.
He emphasized that Sweden’s traditionally conservative approach to its currency reserves — primarily composed of foreign currencies and gold — could benefit from a budget-neutral method of Bitcoin acquisition: simply retaining confiscated Bitcoin rather than liquidating it. This approach, he noted, mirrors the U.S. government's strategy, where seized crypto assets have quietly become a significant holding.
The question posed to the Finance Minister was direct:
"Have the Minister and the Government considered allowing the Riksbank to include Bitcoin in Sweden's currency reserve, and will they act to enable this?"
However, as of now, the Swedish government appears unmoved by the suggestion. In a brief response circulated on social media, officials rejected the proposal, calling the idea "unwise" and reiterating their commitment to "safe" reserve assets.
